Chapter Eleven
The thick forest was filled with shadows later that afternoon, as the sun sunk toward the horizon. Dire wolves werenât animals, they were cruelly intelligent monsters who hunted in a pack. They only barely resembled a wolf. Four footed, a gray coat, and worked as a pack, but their jaws were huge making their heads looked deformed, and their tails were long as whips, hairless, and often used as weapons. Their paws and claws were bigger and sharper, made to rip and slice, more than for traction when running.
They also didnât seem to be around at all. After hunting for a couple of hours theyâd found signs of tracks, but nothing definitive or fresh. The rain yesterday mustâve washed most of them out, and they were smart enough to disguise their trail. It was the first time since heâd arrived in this plane that he felt the urge to shift to his primary form, which had a much better sense of smell than the humans for tracking.
Of course, shifting to his true form during a walkabout was forbidden, on pain of death.
He sighed as he looked around. Heâd even summoned his bow and hunted down an older buck. Heâd skinned and hung it, drained the blood, and cut up the meat into slabs and strips. He had to admit he was surprised he hadnât been attacked, like other hunters were, and wondered if they hadnât left the area.
It looked like theyâd be stuck in Sweetwater for another day after all. Heâd have to come back out tomorrow morning and see if he had better luck.
âLetâs head back, weâll try again in the morning.â
April replied, âWherever they are, theyâre not around here. Their den must be miles from here. Do you want to talk about earlier?â
He grunted, âWhatâs to talk about. The asshole had it coming.â
April giggled, âYes, I suppose he did. Iâm just curious what you were thinking.â
He snorted, âYou want to know if I lost control, for your report.â
April sighed, and he felt her settle her weight on his shoulder.
âIâm pretty sure you didnât fall into a bloodlust, but Iâm not positive, and I canât be unless you tell me.â
It was impossible to lie to her, both through their bond and because of a fairyâs life magic.
âI enjoyed killing the bastard, but I didnât act until he used the physical threat of taking her against her will to coerce her. I wouldâve done the same for any female in this town, not just Nysa who is mine.â
April replied, âFor anyone?â
He shrugged, and then snickered when she grabbed his ear to steady herself with a huff.
âHuman nature. It expands my usual need to protect what is mine to include others. I find that odd as well, even as Iâm starting to accept it. Point is, I was very much in control, and if not content with what was happening, I was at least prepared to let her handle things until theyâd gotten that far. I imagine the king wonât be pleased when he hears what his baron was up to in this place.
